How do cities grow

Why is it that some cities are known as World cities? How do they hold together so many diverse people? What makes them grow? There are many reasons for it ranging from history to geography to commerce but the short answer is that these cities grow because they give all comers to the city an opportunity to grow.

Urbanisation is linked with economics; increased job opportunities, a centralised market, better pay and higher individual wealth have all drawn people to cities. However, every World city offers something apart from jobs and the ease of doing business. And that is quality of life.

World cities are able to see tomorrow and adapt  to the times and now also the climes. They are a step ahead of other cities which are expanding but not necessarily growing.

Finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman underlined this point while presenting the budget for 2022-23. She said that orderly urban development is critical for mega cities to become centres of economic growth and for Tier-2 and 3 cities to gear up for the future. “This would require us to re-imagine our cities into centres of sustainable living with opportunities for all, including women and youth, ” she said.

Maharashtra, whose capital Mumbai is the most dynamic business city in the country, has been ticking all the boxes in this regard.

Thanks to the foresight of its politicians and planners, Mumbai rivals Shanghai as global financial hub. The best and the brightest in the country flock to Mumbai as does anyone with a dream.

Taking the glorious tradition forward are Urban Development minister Eknath Shinde and Secretaries Bhushan Gagrani and Mahesh Pathak.

Under this team, even the urban poor has got a shot at the future through the innovative cluster redevelopment scheme.

The city’s quality of life is set to improve with the completion of mega-infrastructure projects such as the coastal road and the metro lines as well as the Mumbai Climate Action Plan under which electric vehicles are being promoted in a big way.

A hundred new clinics are being opened on the lines of the mohalla clinics in Delhi, digital teaching and tabs are being introduced in civic schools.

This all-round development provides the springboard for accelerated economic growth which has made Mumbai a World city.
